MRS. O. E. SPOONER
Mrs. O. E. Spooner, well known Russell lady, died at her home there on Sunday, March 19, 1939, at the age of 57 years, 4 months and 9 days, after a brief illness with pneumonia.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. McBlain, were held at the Russell Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon and burial was in the Russell cemetery.
Leila Werts Spooner was born Nov 10, 1881, on a farm near Russell. Afterward, the family moved to Russell, where the mother died, and Leila made a home for her father for many years. She finished her high school work in Russell and then attended Drake University in Des Moines and Simpson College in Indianola, and prepared for the teaching profession.
She taught several years in the public schools at Russell, and she taught for five years in public schools at Bridgewater. She also taught in the consolidated school at Tipton for three years. She united with the Methodist church at Russell when a young girl and continued a faithful member.
She was united in marriage to O. E. Spooner on June 3, 1923 and to them was born one son who died in infancy. In the year 1923, she and her husband spent one year in the east.
In 1925 Mr. and Mrs. Spooner moved to Oxford Junction, Iowa. It was at this place that she did some very constructive work in the church and in the community. She taught a class of young girls in the Methodist church there and lived to see many of them grow up into clean and womanly young ladies. She was a constant worker in the church in every community in which she lived.
She had a clear, constructive and active mind. She saw some good in everything and everyone. She painted many pictures, having a real sense of color and proportion. The walls of her home were well adorned with pictures she had painted herself. She loved plants and flowers and seemed to know what they need to make them grow.
Her last work was the decorating of the church dining room for the Mother and Daughter Banquet. She started to help with the decorating for the Father and Son Banquet but became ill and others took her place.
She was kind, sympathetic and patient. She was constantly trying to help others.
She is survived by her husband; two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Drake of Russell, and Mrs. Lou Johnson of Melcher; and three brothers, William Werts of Chariton and George Werts and Asa Werts, both of Russell.
