      Modesta M. Harl, 86, died Thursday, April 12, 2001. Born in Cloverport, Ky., she resided in Evansville, Ind., until 1993, when she moved to Hampton, Va., where she lived with her son, Steve.

      Modesta retired from Vandenburg County, Ind., government service in 1978. She was very active in her church, St. Anthony's, and in the Al-Anon program in Evansville. In Hampton, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

      Mrs. Harl was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Harl, and her oldest son, John A. Harl. She is survived by three daughters, Sondra Deibler and her husband, Dan, of Hampton, Beverly Toelle and her husband, Jerry, of Evansville, Ind., Donna Jean Steele of Evansville; two sons, James Harl and his wife, Shirley, of St. Louis, Mo., and Stephen of Hampton; 21 grandchildren, 34 great- grandchildren, and four great-great- grandchildren.

      A Mass and burial will be held in Evansville, Ind., through Ziemer Funeral Home.
