Her graveside service will immediately follow the Tuesday visitation at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army or to the Western Avenue Community Center, 600 N. Western Ave., Bloomington, IL 61701.
She was born on July 23, 1918, in Michigan City, a daughter of Alva and Emma (Zieske) McCracken.
She married Everett Werts on Feb. 22, 1941. He survives.
Other survivors include daughter Ginger Taylor Saclioglu and son-in-law Cihan Saclioglu, a professor of physics at the University of the Bosphorus.
She was preceded in death by her mother in 1986; her brother, Robert, in 1959; and her father in the 1918 flu epidemic.
She attended Depauw University, Greencastle, Ind., and then was associated with her mother in the florist business for several years.
Their daughter, Ginger, was born in Michigan City in 1943, and in 1957 the family moved to Bloomington-Normal, where Everett was an electrical engineer with General Electric. Mr. Werts retired from GE in 1972, and the family remained in Normal, except for their daughter, Ginger, who married Cihan Saclioglu. Ginger has worked as a teacher and translator in Istanbul for over 30 years.
For 25 years, Mrs. Werts was a highly acclaimed book reviewer in the greater northern and central Illinois-Indiana area, traveling frequently to women's and other civic clubs to deliver biographical reviews on a range of subjects from Indira Gandhi and Albert Einstein to Ernest Hemingway. Having served as president of the Michigan City Women's Study Club, she later became an active member of several Bloomington area clubs as well, notably the History Club and Margaret Fuller Club.
Mrs. Werts also was a staunch member of the Second Presbyterian Church, where, like her husband who served on both the Board of Deacons and the Board of Elders, she was a member of the ladies' circle and prayer group for many years.
Most recently she worked on a logo in needlepoint for the church's Women's Association. Her design is prominently displayed in the Fellowship Room on East Street.
Mrs. Werts was an avid bridge player and gardener. To her daughter and son-in-law she also was known as "The World's Best Cookie Baker."
Ruth will be missed by her family and many friends.
