BROWNSVILLE, Md. - John Leon Kelbaugh, 85, of 20522 Townsend Road, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Sept. 17, 1917, in Weverton, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph and Birdie Ricketts Kelbaugh.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Leigh Kelbaugh.
He retired from Norman S. Early in Hagerstown as a carpenter. He formerly owned Kelbaugh Escorting for Oversized Loads. He had taken steel to Lake Placid for construction projects for the Winter Olympics. He helped build the Washington County Public Library and buildings for the National Park Service in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He was a former member of Steadman-Kennan American Legion Post 96, and a past master of Brunswick (Md.) A.F. & A.M. Lodge 191.
He played baseball for the Weverton team and was an umpire for the Early Women's Softball League.
He is survived by one daughter, Virginia Sulcer of Brownsville; one granddaughter, Jerri D'Angelo of Brownsville; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marlene S. Kelbaugh; four sisters, Thelma Stotler, Elizabeth Phillips, Ruby Wingert and Marguerite Jones; and four brothers, Joseph Kelbaugh, George Kelbaugh, Robert Kelbaugh and Donald Kelbaugh.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Gapland. The Rev. Wendell McClellan will officiate. Burial will be in Old Brethren Cemetery, Brownsville.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, Brunswick, which will open at 9 a.m.
