Beulah (Bea) Jane "Demory" Briggs, 95, of Falling Waters, WV, formerly of Frederick, Boyds & Gaithersburg, MD, died on February 11, 2014, at Care Haven Center, Martinsburg, WV. She had been the wife of William E. Briggs, for 60 years. Mr. Briggs passed away in 1997.
Born August 3, 1918, in Taylorstown, VA, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Nona Demory. She was the sister of the late Charles and Leo Demory.
Let's think for a moment! Woodrow Wilson was our 28th President. This country was involved in World War I, women worked in factories because the men went off to war. During these tough times incomes were very small or non-existent. Some people had to live off the land.
As a child she grew up till the age of six in a small community known as Taylorstown, Virginia. There was NO running water in this old farmhouse or bathrooms; food was what her parents grew in the garden, raised in the henhouse or tending livestock. She had NO television, Game Boy, computer toys or other types of games or shopping malls to walk around. She used something called imagination to occupy her time and household chores. She made do with what she had and was very thankful.
She had NO Christmas toys, park to play in, bike to ride, or anything else. What she had was the guidance and direction from her parents and the LOVE they had for her and her two older brothers, Charlie and Leo. She learned to be patient, appreciate what she had, and family values. One Christmas her brother Leo had saved enough money and gave her a doll. What a treat that must have been!
Ms. Briggs started her working career as a very young girl at Shines Department store in Gaithersburg, MD, that later changed to Goldberg's Departments store.
She worked in the food service industry for more than thirty years. She went on to work at the Navy Exchange at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD. There was a brief time when she worked at Delmar's Bowling Lanes in Gaithersburg; now known as the Golden Bull Restaurant. From there she found her last employment at the Atomic Energy Commission in Germantown, MD., as an Assistant Manager in the cafeteria.
In her early years she enjoyed: Canning, Baking Angel Food Cakes, and Pulling Homemade Taffy, making Homemade Ice Cream, Walnut Brittle, Fruit Cakes and so much more. She always liked doing for others and seeing their smiles. Her son, Donald Briggs and his wife Violet Joyce, of Falling Waters, WV, survives her. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Joyce Briggs; and a son, Terry Robert Briggs.
Also surviving are: three grandchildren, Lorrie Briggs, of Harpers Ferry, WV, James Briggs and his wife Linda of Reisterstown, MD, Stacey Storm and her husband Justin of Frederick, MD. There are five great-grandchildren: Brandon Kapeluch and his wife Erin, Christopher and Connor Briggs, Catie and Cody Storm. Great-great grandchild: Emmalee Kapeluch. She had two godchildren: Elliott Hulley and Erin Clapper. Two Great-godchildren: Abi Clapper and Calvin Hulley. Marjorie Bohrer, sister-in-law, Frederick, MD. A very special friend, Kathy Hulley, Boyds, MD. Numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services have not been made at this time.
Donations can be made on behalf of Beulah Briggs at the American Heart Association.
