    • KNOXVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police have identified three people who died in a double murder-suicide in Maryland.

The murder-suicide took place in the 600 block of Valley Road in Knoxville located roughly 60 miles northwest of DC in Washington County.

Johnie Green, age 87, shot his 86-year-old wife, Mary, and their 56-year-old special needs son, Mark before taking his own life, police said.

Johnie Green called a family member to say he had shot his wife and son and was about to shoot himself, according to police.

Neighbors are stunned by the tragedy, including Idell Waters who has known the Green family across the street for years.

Waters describes them as wonderful neighbors who would help her out. But the couple suffered health issues, according to Waters.

"There was something wrong with a mass in his stomach. They told him it was cancer. Everything was too much for him I guess," Waters said.

Police came to the home around 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning for a welfare check.

Johnnie Green and his son were found dead at the scene. Mary Green was medavac'd to the hospital and later died from her injuries. All three had suffered gunshots to the head.

Mary and Mark Green were found in a bedroom, Johnnie Green was in the basement.

"He just couldn't take it any longer I guess," Waters said.

Neighbors said the elderly couple had 3 children including Mark Green.

"Mark is a very nice guy. He use to drive his bike almost everyday in the summer time. He put a lot of miles on that bike. He was mentally challenged or handicapped, he was a nice guy and willing to help you out if he could, " a neighbor said.
