Notes |
- From the book: The John Jackson and Esther Ann Werts Family History, compiled by Philip W. Allen, 1994
After completing the rural schools, Susie married Sherman McCoy at Russell. Sherman is the son of David and Ann McCoy. David fought in the Civil War, was an Iowa Legislator, and Mayor of Russell. In 1888, while courting Susie and before the wedding, Sherm took the train to western Nebraska, then walked 30 mile to claim land available to him as a veteran. He built a sod house and returned to Iowa. In 1890, very soon after their wedding, Sherm and Susie moved to their farm in Chase County NE, called the Lone Star Ranch. They participated in the development of that area, at first living in the sod house where four of their five children were born. Several bad years occurred, with drought and grasshoppers, forcing many other settlers to leave the area. Sherm traded horses and promissory notes for their land, accumulating several farms. Susie shopped by Sears catalog and kept the books on their operation. Better times came, they hired hands, built a better house and gradually modernized their living and farming processes. Before they moved into the nearby town of Imperial in 1917, they owned 12 sections of land and farmed more than 800 acres, grazing cattle on the rest. They were both active Presbyterian Church members in their youth, uniting with the Methodist Church in Imperial in 1922. After Shermans death, Susie lived on there in their home, actively participating in the church and other activities. She was a charter member of the Dorcas Society and of the Women s Society of Christian Service, a life member of the latter.
