    • Daisy "Madalyn" Cates, 97, Marion, died at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014 in the Summitville Convalescent Center. She was born in Sycamore to the late Owen and Sarah "Annie" (Crousore) Horoho. She married Charles Lewis Cates on April 25, 1942. He preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1977.

      Madalyn attended Marion College and Ball State, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught first and second grades in the Howard County Jackson Township School for three years, first and second grade in Mt. Olive School for one year and was a substitute teacher off and on. Madalyn was also a farmer's wife and helped her husband on the family farm.

      She was a member of the Sycamore Friends Church and the United Society of Friends Women. She was previously a member of the Swayzee United Methodist Women and the Mt. Olive United Methodist Women. Madalyn played organ and piano at various churches for many years. She taught the Adult Literacy Program in Marion and was a member of the Home Economics Club and the Richland Township Farm Bureau. Madalyn enjoyed gardening, crafts and card making.

      Madalyn is survived by her daughter, Shirley Teal, Swayzee; son, Don (Carol) Cates, Anderson; brother, Jack E. Horoho, North Manchester; grandchildren, Sarah (Joshua) Hull of Summitville, Aric (Kristy) Cates of Austin, Texas, and Andrea (Jay) Mielke of Anderson; great-grandchildren, Levi, Lexi, Elijah, Emma and Elizabeth.

      In addition to her parents and husband, Madalyn was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ellen Cron, Margaret Grant, and Peggy Summers; brother, Ned Horoho.

      Funeral service will be at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 at the Sycamore Friends Church, Sycamore with Pastor Jesse Vore officiating.

      Burial will be in Gardens of Memory, Huntington County, IN

      Visitation will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

      Arrangements are being handled by Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Rybolt Chapel, 314 N. Washington St., Swayzee.

      Memorials may be made to White's Residential and Family Services, 5233 S. 50 E., Wabash, 46992 or the Sycamore Friends Building Fund, 1148 N. 1100 E., Greentown, IN 46936.

      Honorable pallbearers were: Jay Mielke, grandson in law, Levi Bybee, great grandson, Josh Hull, grandson in law, Elijah Hull, great grandson, Bill Horoho and Dennis Horoho, nephews.
