He married France Marie Rullman on January 17, 1948. She was born April 20, 1917 in Connecticut and died October 2, 1985 in Takoma Park, Maryland. - The following information has been graciously provided by Michael Virts, son of Elbert Leon Virts.
Served as a Scout in the 32nd Infantry Division, the Thunderbird Division, during World War II. He went through Normandy, down the coast of France, into the mountains of southern France, and the crossed into southern Germany.

Elbert Leon Virts, 81, of Silver Spring, died June 26 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He lived in Silver Spring for 48 years and retired from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory after over 35 years of service in administration. He was a graduate of Strayer College in Washington, D.C. Mr. Virts was the son of the late Elbert Joseph and Lela Virts of Lovettsville, Va. He was a World War II U.S. Army combat veteran, who served in campaigns in France and Germany as a scout in the infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of American Legion Post 268. He is survived by wife, Vivian Virts of Silver Spring; son, Michael Virts of Silver Spring; stepdaughter, Cathy Ernst of Poolesville; brother, Aubrey Virts of Hamilton, Va.; and three nephews and a niece. Visitation and a service were held at Montgomery Hills Baptist Church. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill. Memorial donations may be made to the Montgomery Hills Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Montgomery Hills Baptist Church, 9727 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, Md. 20910.
